November 2005 Newsletter

Dear Parents & Swimmers-

I want to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the 2005-06 SD Swim Team. Since the delay in opening the pool and the approaching deadline for Fall Splash the parent board held a brief meeting at the South Dearborn High School on November 02, 2005. It is my intention to keep everyone informed via this newsletter and posting information close to the mailboxes. If you need to update your Email address for this service, please drop off your current information in the payment box in the pool area. Please also keep in mind that your family mailbox will contain important information throughout the year. Please take the time to check your mailbox and keep the papers, awards and updates cleaned out. Please take a moment and introduce yourself at the next practice or event. I am always available by phone or Email, if you have a question or comment, feel free to contact me. I look forward to a successful season and we are glad you are a part of the TEAM!

Here are the highlights from our Parent Board Meeting:

The PB welcomed Jane Sturtz to the board. With two active swimmers on the team, Jane will make a great addition to the board. Our discussion also looked at the vision of the board in relation to the coaching staff. The Parent Board is dedicated to the support of our staff. These coaches are entrusted with shaping our young athletes, and we should rely on their ability to lead the team. Please make sure you introduce yourself to the coaches. They will have control of the team. The Board will monitor the finances, equipment and the needs of the swimmers and the entire team. In the unlikely event a problem arises with a coach or member of the staff, including the Parent Board, that problem will need to be brought to the boards attention in writing. The board will address it at the next meeting or call a special meeting if timing is a concern. The Board will work to address and correct the situation if necessary. The family will then be contacted in writing with regards to the solution.

The PB discussed the fund raising project for this year. We have plenty of lollipops and pizza peeler cards to sell. It was decided by the board to pass out fund raising items on Nov. 17th & 22nd during your child(s) practice**. In accordance with your parent contract, you can choose the candy or pizza peelers on a first come first serve basis. We have a limited number of pizza peelers. If you choose not to sell the candy, please be prepared to pay the $50 buy-out fee. If you have not yet returned your parent contract, you will need to do that by Monday November 7, 2005 to ensure your child is able to participate. I know not everyone is a fan of selling things. It is important to the TEAM that we have these activities to keep dues and other expenses in line. Please help us and give a 100% participation in this fund raiser and the Fall Splash Event! Workers are needed in all areas of the Fall Splash. Please ask for a list of jobs and assignments available.

**(Please note your child will not be able to pick-up the fundraising pack. A parent or guardian MUST sign for the fund raising product.)

If you are interested in being the chair of a committee such as Concessions, Awards, Team Spirit, please drop me a line and let me know. With our diverse skills and backgrounds the Board could benefit from your special talent or skills. If you have some extra time and would like to put in some extra time with the team, please let someone know.

We have discussed a Movie Night fundraiser. The date(s) are December 02, 2005 and February 10, 2006. The December date would allow potential Christmas shoppers and busy families to drop off the kids for a night of movie fun while the parents handle other business. The Movie Night will be advertised throughout the school corporation to maximize the attendance. Please contact Rick Zimmerman or Shelby if you are interested in helping with this project. Please pass this on to your children so they can ask a few friends to meet them there.

Thanks again for supporting the TEAM. Each swimmer and their family is an important member. Take the time to promote our sport, our athletes deserve the recognition. If you have any pictures from a swim event, please take the time to submit those for our bulletin board or better yet the local newspaper for a sports story. Back to Top

2005 Fall Splash Newsletter

Sunday afternoon closes the 2005 Fall Splash contest held at the South Dearborn High School.  With that event under our belt, it was a great opportunity to see your child's hard work payoff.  I have several highlights from the event and wanted to share several great stories with you.  Before the accolades start,  I want to thank our workers and officials who put in countless hours both in front of the crowd and behind the scenes.  Timers, runners, and the computer staff kept the meet flowing along.  Our officials made the event smooth and in compliance with all rules and regulations.  I always like to offer a special thanks to Pat Lunsford, who attended our meet as an official.  For those of you that don't know Pat, he was on-deck and starting in both the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games.  His attendance at most every high profile meet on the State, Masters and Olympic level gives our meet something not everyone can offer.  Pat has a host of stories and tips for anyone involved in swimming.  His knowledge and reputation in our sport is beyond reproach.  It is not everyday your child can get the words "take your mark" from an Olympic level official.

Our concession stand was successful in part to everyone who carried, sold, stood a post, and cooked our fare.  A special thanks to Paula Stevens for her A+ BBQ which arrived on Sunday.  It's parents like this who make our sport fun and enjoyable.  If you had an opportunity to look around beyond the busy clerk of course area and camping area, I hope you saw some familiar faces.  Some of those workers were our high school team members.  Those students came to work the meet and I hope your child had an opportunity to see them giving back to a sport that produces some of the best student athletes in the school corporation.

The buzz word of the weekend seems to be "double digit" club.  Many of our swimmers dropped double digits in their events.  Another credit to our coaching staff and dedication from our swimmers.  Just think, as one kid put it "that's like between 10-99!"  Yes, some pretty big numbers for each swimmer.  Oak Hills, East Central, Batesville/YMCA are great ingredients for a fast meet.  The coaches and staff were super to work with and we hope to see all those teams back again next year.

The after meet clean up was smooth and quick thanks to Bobby the facilities maintenance person from the high school.  As always, he goes above and beyond his scope of duty to help the swim team.  Not everyone stops to think about how many jobs are required to have this caliber of event.  If you are new to the team and didn't participate because of some apprehension, please let me know and we can assign you to a mentor through your first year.

Before I close I have one more special thank you to send.  On Saturday afternoon you might have noticed the smell of pancakes in the air.  No, not another addition to the concession stand, but the new fragrance worn by Roger Fehling.  Roger came to the afternoon session to work the computer since we were in a bind after starting his day at 4 am with the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast.  Roger has a unique background with the team, since he was one of the pioneering families that set this in motion.  While Roger has no immediate children swimming, his daughter is Coach Jones and his granddaughter is Morgan Jones.  As we all know it takes a special person to be a swim parent.  It takes an even bigger person to be a alumni- swim parent and still work a session of Fall Splash!  Back to Top

Thanks to everyone for a great meet and special weekend!
